Mark,

Absolute? Absolutely not. It's a judgement call. I mentioned that I put
one on the hottest drive in my S900. Or more accurately, I put my hottest drive
(Maxtor 80gig ATA133) in the bay associated with the built-in fan housing.
This HDD was obviously hotter than a WD 60gig and a WD 30gig (all 7200rpm)
after they ran without fans for a while. Made sense to me. It's no longer hot to
the touch. An under-disk fan cooler (a thin fan with housing that mounts to
directly onto the HDD) is even more efficient and can be used in a 5.25" bay
with these 3.5" HDDs.

As for my earlier statement "...but the ATA contoller will need to
go into ane of the top two slots to avoid the PCI-PCI bridge problem
associated
with the lower four slots" it _is_ too dogmatic.

ATA card compatibility with the lower 4 slots does depend on the model of the
card (chip manufacturer, actually). For the once common but now discontinued
ATA66 cards, Sonnet Tempo66 and VST UltraTek66, the Sonnet has been used
successfully in the lower 4 slots but the VST card gives problems in common
configurations. I haven't done the tests with the VST, so I won't get into that.
These are the two I've used so I'll be wiser, especially this time of night,
and wait for someone to speak from experience about the Sonnet ATA133 card.

Mea culpa for the earlier dogma about this issue, but the original post had
gone unanswered for a day or so and I was trying to take the load off those who
are relied on so often.
