David, I posted your question at the XPFacto forum since you didn't get any replies here. With 2400 plus forum members perhaps someone has one of these.
The only other thing I can think of is OSX does have this bug at least for me. In Network settings where you see the ports Modem,Printer, Ethernet which ever port your are using for Internet needs to be first in the list and the ones your not using should be unchecked. You change the order by dragging the names.I just had to do this for Panther it's still not fixed ;-) You won't see USB port here. Modem port is used for either serial or USB modem and the software auto maps. (to the best of my knowledge) later Will S
