Mike, This is right up my alley - If the 8mm tapes were shot out of focus, you will not be able to sharpen them up much (a program like after effects can sharpen images to a certain extent... but it's almost better to just leave it alone). Dubbing from 8mm tape to DVD or DV is done at most any video duplication service in the yellow pages... for a pro's opinion on who is good for dubbing in your town call a TV station's advertising department or a local production house and ask. Also see if any wedding video guys do it... they might still shoot on 8mm and burn to DVD for clients. Don't forget to "punch some numbers" on cost. Is it less expensive to buy a DVD burner and a 8mm deck to do it yourself? It might be worth while pricing them at an electronics superstore. How would I do it?: I would borrow your 8mm camera (assuming you have one) and loop it through my mini DV camera into my system then dump it to DVD.
