After reading about the Radeon flashing possibilities, I ordered the Power Color 64MB from New Egg this week.
Today, with the instructions and help from list folks (thanks Dan S.) I tried to flash the card. The problem was that every time (I tried about six times) I got a Write Error. Here is the error message.
Serial Rom Bios Device ID = 0x5159 ASIC Device ID = 0x5159 Flash Type = ST Error: write error at 65536
Error 0FL01
This is the error everyone with a 64k ROM is reporting. Will's reply about "how difficult the PC is compared to a Mac" has nothing to do with this. In fact it makes no sense! The fact that this can be done on a PC and not on a Mac shows that PCs are more flexible!
Anyways, If your "2 step process" results in a card that works in your Mac then just go with that. Lots of folks have reported that neither method will work with a 64K ROM card.
Also, is your PowerColor card the only video card in your PC when you attempt to flash it? Some people say that it's better to have 2 cards in your PC, and have your monitor attached to the other card while you flash the Radeon. I've never done it this way - mainly because the PC I used to flash my cards is so old it wouldn't boot with 2 video cards in it! Perhaps you can give that a try? Also, maybe try the card in a different slot?
If all else fails, return the one you haveand go to eBay. There are flashed PC Radeon cards being sold on eBay for about $70. Still better than the $120 you pay for a real Mac Radeon 7000!
Here's a link to one!
