Some of the remaining 'new' G4 Apples are OS 9 bootable.
However, I keep seeing references to 9.2.2, etc.
Will these boot in 9.1 ?

OS 9.1 and 9.2 are pretty much the same thing. 9.2 has some added items so it will run as the Classic environment inside OSX.

Or will many of the apps on the S900 that operated under 9.1 do fine in
a Apple runnng 9.2 ?

I have not found any programs that would work in 9.1 but not in 9.2

I am looking at updating and being able to function in 9 may be an
important factor.

If you have some programs that only run in 9, I would definitely look at a system that can boot into OS 9. I found running programs like PhotoShop in the Classic environment, inside OSX to be painful.

Don't necessarily need the fastest/latest CPU, i.e. the G5, which allows
9 in classic mode.

I might be wrong, but it was my understanding, that the latest machines could run OS 9.2 as classic mode, but could not boot into OS 9.2
