While burrowing about in my S900, I checked the battery's voltage which read 3.2v. Does anyone know what the limit of usabe current is or when it is practical to change the battery, without waiting for battry death?
You need to check the battery voltage with the battery installed in the machine and the machine unplugged or the outlet (power strip) turned off. An unloaded voltage reading isn't very useful.
Most of the datasheets for the static RAM chips claim that they can hold their data down to 2V. But if the SRAM chip isn't sitting across the leads of the battery there might be some other draw down before the voltage reaches the SRAM chip. So I'd replace it when it drop below 3V loaded, or maybe 2.5 if you're feeling adventurous.
Actually, this would be an interesting experiment, but I'm not going to do it.
