I went out to get a new hard drive for my S900 today. I needed more
room than the current 30 gig drive hooked up to my pci card provided. I
didn't intend to go this far, but I wound up buying a Western Digital
250 GB drive. It was on sale for $140. It says it has an 8MB cache. I
didn't know that hard drives had onboard cache.
Are there any problems inherent in using a drive this big on my
S900? I do some digital audio, and plan to learn digital video. I'll
have to put my OS 10.2 on the first 8 gigs, but other than that...?

Mike

Well in order to know the answer I need to know which ATA PCI card you are using. The ATA 66 & 100 cards are limited to a maximum size of either 128 or 137 GB depending on which way you measure the drive size. (1024 or 1000 mb = 1GB manufactures use the smaller 1000 mb = 1 gb to make the drives larger ;-) . This limit can not be over come with partitioning the drive. You lose everything over 128/137 GB. Older 33 ATA cards have even lower drive size limits. So to use a drive over the size of 128/137 GB you need an ATA 133 PCI card. Just in case the first 8GB of the ATA drive in OSX limit only applies to the VST Ultra ATA & Sonnet ATA100 & 133 & 133 Trio ATA PCI cards.
I believe the above info to be correct. I'm counting on corrections if I'm wrong :-)
