Greg, If you are working with audio apps in OS 9, you will definitely need to have OS 9 installed on a separate partition from OS X, and use a different one for running in Classic mode. Once an OS 9 installation has been run in Classic, the System suitcase gets altered making direct control of hardware very unreliable. The only thing that doesn't get broken is printing.
