Hi,

I picked up a couple of reflashed PC Radeon 7000 cards off eBay, one with
32mb and the other with 64mb. They were meant for S900s with Sonnet G4
upgrades (700mhz and 800mhz).

I popped in the 64mb card, added the Griffin monitor adapter and fired up
the S900. The video gave off thick black, vertical stripes. Several restarts
gave the same result. So, on a whim, I swapped out the G4/800 for the
G4/700. Joy! I got a normal picture. However, there's a problem.

The video refresh on the old Apple 20-inch monitor is very slow in Quark.I went to the ATI site and looked for a download to control the card, but I
have some questions.

1. It gives a firmware download for the "Mac Edition" of the 7000. Is this
a "Mac Edition" or is it not, having been flashed to the Mac ROM? I don't
want to flash it again and blow the card if that's not the thing to do.

Your card is "working" so you shouldn't need to flash the card again. Yes it is now a Radeon 7000 mac Edtion. The Radeon Mac Edtion(not marked 7000) is an older card.
2. Is there a control panel to adjust the 7000, as I've seen with other
cards?
Yes, there is for OS 9.x AT the ATI web site you need the Radeon 7000 Mac Ed drivers. Click on Mac OS 9.x to get the ones you need. This should incude a control panel. you want " Recommended Oct 2002 ATI REtail Update. Since the card is already flashed correctly (we hope) you should not need the " Radeon 700 Mac Rom v 208 update" which is a flasher for the firmware on the card. Which is different then drivers for the card.
3. Why would the 64mb card not work with the G4/800? A bad flash job? A bad
upgrade card? There's certainly enough video RAM to handle the processor.

If anybody has any answers or potential solutions, I'd love to see them.
Thanks.

Jerry

If you read the info at ATI you will see the Mac Radeon 7000 card requires OS 9.2.1 min to run correctly. This is why it is running slow as it is running without the proper drivers in OS 9.04. There are two possible fixes. You could upgrade to OS 9.2.1 or OS 9.2.2 . I believe OS 9.1 is a free upgrade if you have 9.04 installed. You then need to use OS 9 helper to install the free upgrades to OS 9.2.1 and then 9.2.2. It's fairly easy to do and the OS 9 helper downloads teh 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 from Apple and installs them. OS 9.1 is the last Apple supported OS for older machines. So that is why you need to use OS 9 helper to do the install.
It can be found here:

This is easy to do but if you are on dial up will take a long time to download the needed OS upgrades.
It is also possible to add the need Open Gl extensions to OS 9.04 and even OS 8.6 and then the card should work correctly. Sorry but I don't have time to look up the needed extensions right now. Got to get back to work ;-) I could later or someone else may help in the mean time.
As far as the cpu that didn't work it could be as simple as pushing the cuda button after changing hardware or I seem to remember some issues using the Sonnet G4 800 with Umax machines .
Don't listen to the nah sayers you can get this to work!
later Will S
