Hi Doug,

It sounds like "HP Communications" [a faceless background process] is
competing for CPU cycles with Excel. Check at HP's web site to see if you
have the latest version of the driver package, since bad behavior on the
part of this app has been an issue for some time, and I have had better
results with the more recent versions.

You can also try using a utility like "Peek-a-Boo"
[http://www.clarkwoodsoftware.com/peekaboo/] to both investigate the impact
that this and other processes is having on CPU performance, as well as
adjust the relative priority of the various processes.
