Thanks for the info, Tom. Funny thing is that the startup volum has been hfs+ for many 
years, but this error message is relatively new and it's the same, original hard drive.

How would I go about disabling the cache in the software or getting a newer driver 
that would work?

Spence,

I'm guessing that your startup volume is hfs+. Early versions of cdtk do 
not understand hfs+. You can disable the cache in the software, or you 
can reformat your startup partition as hfs (not recommended - you must 
back up and/or reinstall everything), or you can use a different cd 
driver, or upgrade cdtk. I used to use a patched apple driver with 
excellent results with the original matsushita in the s900.
