Hi Joe,
I'm not one of the experts here, but maybe my experience will help:

1. We have Panther running on an old iMac G3 - I think it's a 266. It's a little pokey, but your 366 should certainly work.
2. I have 10.2 working on an S900. I've made one attempt to install 10.3 with XPostFacto; need to give it another try to see if I did something wrong. I think some folks here have gotten it to work. I did the 10.2 installation with Sonnet's installer, since I have a Crescendo G4 card, but the last time I looked they had not yet come out with a 10.3 installer.
3. I have an a 2 gig hard drive, an old Yamaha CDR and a Zip drive working on the external SCSI bus. (The first time I installed OS X was actually on the external drive, but it was a little small.) I haven't gotten the scanners to work yet, but I think that's a driver and/or age problem.
4. The CR506 works except that I can't get audio CDs to import properly to iTunes.
5. The tt128 video card functioned, but I never could find a way to shut off "synch on green," so it took massive adjustments of the monitor's hardware settings to get anything like an acceptable display. (And you still wouldn't have wanted to use it for Photoshop!) The new Radeon 7000 does fine. (I spent the money for the Mac version.)

So, on the whole, I'd say give 10.2 a try. Your first acquisition priority should probably be a new video card.

Good luck!
-Eric

Hi all,

I've been lurking for a while and checking through the archives so I could try extending the useful life of my S900 for a bit more. I just want to make sure I've got everything straight before I begin.

Current config:
S900 running OS 9.1
XLR8 MACh Carrier G3 366MHz
SCSI bus 0 = Quantum Fireball ST2.1 (system disc), Matshita CD ROM CR506, Seagate SX15150n 4GB
SCSI bus 1 = IBM DCAS32160 2GB, Matshita CDR CW7502, Iomega Zip 100
PCI - tt128M video, Emagic Audiowerks 8, XLR8 firewire and USB cards

1. Will the G3/366MHz have enough horsepower?
2. OS 10.2 or OS 10.3? I only ask 'cause I have the 10.2 discs in hand...
3. SCSI bus 1 will be unusable, correct? So I need to internally mount whatever I want to keep from that bus? I'm a little unclear about how OS X will deal with the S900 SCSI stuff.
3. I'll need a different CDRom than the stock CR506 correct? Can I use the CW7502 or does it have to be Apple branded?
4. I plan to leave OS9 where it is and install a ST339918 (Barracuda) to hold OS X - that needs to be formatted from the OS X cdrom yes?
5. Replace video card (re. current thread on video cards)

Am I missing anything else?

Thanks in advance for the advice and assistance,

Joe.
