Which *nix, *bsd, linux versions/types are easy to install and use on
a C600? Which ones are you all using?

This question is worth a FAQ entry...

A. YellowDogLinux will boot the machine with BootX, an extension for OS 9.x and below. The Mac firmware has enough tricks in it that a minimal Mac OS environment is needed to get things rolling. However...

B. NetBSD does have some additional tricks to boot through the firmware without needing the Mac OS. But...

C. The C600 onboard video is not supported in NetBSD requiring a console (read: text install) install. As the famously erudite NHL-cum-Red Wings color analyst Mickey Redmond says about hockey, "This is not for the nervous person!" This can be worked around via a PCI video card and there are a number of older ATI Rage Pro cards ending up in a dumpster that could easily be employed as a video solution.

D. A *nixish OS will work but there will be twists and turns. The C series had a number of issues much of which were based on the Performa 6400 design and subject to those limitations due to the clone license. I had thought about taking my beloved c600 and putting it to work as a router/firewall/DHCP server but I'm holding off until I have more time to play with it. BTW, I've become a BSD proponent over Linux but that's a flame war for another time...
