>Anyone have experience with an "iMate" from Griffin Technologies?

Yes, I have been using an iMate for quite a while and it works fine. I
use it to connect my old trusty Apple extended ADB keyboard that I
didn't want to give up when I went to a G4. Even the power switch works.
The only issue is that I have to reinitialize it occasionally when the
keyboard response becomes sluggish (maybe once per month) which takes
only a few seconds in the control panel.
