If you are going to be removing drives it would be a good timw to replace the battery. You need to get the drive mounting bracket/sled/whatever out to access the battery. That is the hard part. Replacing the battery is a snap from there. I am not sure if a dead battery will cause boot failure. If your battery dies completely and you boot without it you will be prompted to set your date and time. If you need to use your computer before you can change batteries, be sure to set your time every time you boot. The consequences of not doing so are well...I don't even want to think about it.
The battery installation is straight-forward. The battery sticks to a velcro pad on the motherboard and the connector is polarized so it is difficult to plug it in wrong. (Some would say impossible but I have learned there is no such thing, grin)
