Thanks to Gregg's and John's suggestions about extracting audio files with programs such as SoundApp, I'm now functioning in OS 9.1, but I still can't get the internal drive to produce usable files in OS X 10.2. (The iTunes meter shows no sound activity, even though the track appears to be progressing.)

I don't really see any options to set in System Preferences Sound - there's nothing available but "Built-in Audio Controller."

An external Yamaha drive/burner does work with OS X, but unfortunately produces an intermittent "clacking" noise in the audio tracks, even with error correction turned on in iTunes. The internal drive on a networked iMac running Panther also works okay, so I have some options, but it's still puzzling about the S900's drive.

Thanks to all who sent suggestions.

- Eric
