I believe the confusion is over how different ATA cards react. The Sonnett (Acard) ATA66 is seen as a SCSI by system profiler, and the 8GB partition doesn't apply. The VST 66 and some of the later Sonnet cards are seen as IDE and do require the 8GB partition limit, as did the Beige G3 Mac with IDE Drive. It depends on the chip in the card you have and how it is seen by the computer. Paul C
Yeah, I knew there was an issue with this, but I didn't know which IDE cards had the problem and which did not. All I know is my VST 66s definitely have the problem. But the problem only happens on Old World Macs. I have a VST 66 in my B&W G4 and it has no problems there.
Which is only one of many reasons why folks who are still struggling with OS X on S900s and the like should seriously consider moving up to a B&W or an early model G4 tower. They are cheap on eBay, and parts for them (RAM, CPU upgrades, IDE drives and cards, video cards, etc) are cheap as well. I have less $ invested in my "B&W G4" (512 megs RAM, 500 mhz G4, VST 66 IDE, Mac-flashed PC version 64 meg Radeon 7000 video, IDE CD/RW) than in my S900, and the B&W is a much faster machine, with built-in USB and firewire, etc. Plus you don't need to fiddle with XPF any longer, as it's a supported machine.
I'm about to the point of selling my S900, as I never use it any more. It has Sonnet G4/450, 688 (I think) megs RAM, 33 gig SCSI drive, 9 gig SCSI drive, IDE CD-ROM on a VST 66, Mac-flashed PC version 32 meg Radeon 7000 video. It currently has 10.3.4 and 9.2.2 on it.
