Smalldog newsletter this week says 20 % of drive should be available for OSX. All sorts of odd things start to happen when the disk space drops much below 10 %. Even with a big hard drive.

Thanks for this very interesting tidbit.
It would be very easy to fall into this trap because I am no longer partitioning the drive to keep the System (Panther) in its own place.
The s900's OS 8 - 9.1 System folders operated reliably from a.....2 gb partition (of a 9 gb UW drive) for many years.
(As mentioned by others in previous threads, partitioning is deemed not necessary in X ?)
It appears the recent Macs running OS X have all drifted to less expandability (only one additional drive bay) and instead drives and memory chip sizes have become much larger.
Based on Will's post, I can see how one could run into hiccups even with a 80 or 160 gb drive that is stock in a new Mac.
So....a 80gb Seagate awaits installation into a G4 1.25 (which came with a 80 gb drive) and the G5 recently got a 200 gb Seagate to supplement the 160 gb stock drive.
This is in addition to the 160 gb drive that was installed in a Firewire case from OWC.
