From my experience, plug and play but haven't tried it with a printer.
Mine is a SIIG USB 2.0/1.1 card, installed mainly to plug in card readers or cameras as a temporary solution with the intentions of migrating the card to a newer machine.
Haven't used it since getting a firewire card reader.
