The C500 has both SCSI and IDE controllers. Umax (C500) and Motorola (on
the StarMax 3000) both shipped their systems loaded with IDE drives. The
controllers in addition to the "stellar" Tanzania chipset are not
powerhouses by any means but are functional. I have successfully put 40
gig IDE drives in both the C500 and the StarMax 3000, it's just a matter
of pulling out the old HD and putting in the new one. Of course, I'm
running Linux on them (both my website and my wife's website are running
on these two systems). Take that back, my wife also has a C500 with a 40
gig drive that is formatted MacOS running 9.1 (with a G3 upgrade). I
don't recall running into any problems. You might need HD Toolkit, but
don't hold me to that.

IDE is the way to go, you'll spend too much on SCSI drives given the
vintage and speed of the hardware.

If you want to add an internal HD, that might be tough. I think it can be
done, the C500 is not known for being too roomy. After all, you only get
2 PCI slots.
