It would be my guess from your description that the firmware of the drive has become corrupted. I have bought and sold hundreds of cdrws over the last few years and this is a big problem. Some can be fixed and some can't. Some drives they don't offer firmware for.
If you look around for the drive make & model and 'firmware", you might find what you need. then you will need to determine if there are Mac firmwares or just pc. If only PC, you will need to flash it on a PC, but this is where it gets tricky and you have to know what your doing often in DOS but win 98 is best in my experience. Not for the novice and that includes me.
First try the separate bus as Master just to rule that out. Also closely inspect the pins on the back of the drive.
