Chuck, I caught your problem of trying to rescue files from a drive that was initialized. That's a tough one.

I do notice that nobody mentioned 'Data Rescue' for OSX. You have to boot up from another drive. The rescue process can take all night depending on size, just let it finish. You can find it at Versiontracker.com

I'd say before running any more utilities, try it. It doesn't work well with photoshop graphic files, but I think the readme does mention email. Read the info before trying. It also has different repair methods.
