My replacement card came this past Friday and I still haven't gotten the
software to work. The new
card works every time, unlike the first card sent which was flakey. Because the
software won't
work, I can't get the card to run past the 500 MHz it boots at. I have gone so
far as to borrow a
hard drive, erase it, install only OS 9 and CPU Director, disconnect everything
but the video card
and still CPUD doesn't work.

I downloaded an older version of XLR8 Mach Speed Control but I need to buy a
serial number to
make it work. I'm not opposed to doing that, but if that doesn't work, I'll be
eating a 15%
restocking fee from OWC, about $31, (if there's "nothing wrong" with the
product and "I" just
can't make it work) plus the cost of MSC. I would be out about $41.

Googling (read "grasping") for straws, it seems the problem might be related to
the onboard cache.
I believe it needs to be disabled, but isn't it soldered on? I have read that
CPU D does not have
the ability to disable the L2 cache. Maybe this is preventing CPU D from
working? I launched Mach
Speed Control just to see if it would lock up. I only got as far as the serial
number box, of
course, but at least it didn't lock up. I think MSC has an option to disable
the L2 cache. Anybody
know for sure?

I also tried various CPUD inits with the program...no luck.

My motherboard is a Power Surge made in 1996. There is a white paper in the
MSC download talking
about how Macs prior to September (?) 1997 have problems with speculative
processing. I don't see
how that would be a problem for the CPU D software, but could it be?

To sum up: the replacement 1GHz card boots every time but only at 500 MHz and
since I apparently
do not have the skills to get CPU Director working, I can't enable/disable the
card's cache and/or
increase it's speed. And, it appears the motherboard cache needs to be disabled
for which I don't
have a satisfactory solution.

Any more suggestions? If I get home in time from work, I may try calling OWC's
tech line to see
what they suggest.

Thanks,
Dave Stephens
