Hi,
Has anyone ever replaced the fan on their S900? I love the computer, but the
fan noise is too loud...I would prefer something quiet. I went to
the Staples to
pick up a replacement, but the fans are of different sizes? What have people
used as replacement fans?
IIRC, one fan is an 80mm X 25.5mm square fan and the other fan is a
92mm X25.5mm square fan. That is, the optional front fan is a
different size from the installed rear fan. I don't remember which
is which at the moment.
Either fan is a very standard size. I replaced mine with Panasonic
PanaFlow (AKA Hydro Wave) fan. They are pretty commonly available.
They come in four speed ratings. The higher speeds move more air,
but they also create more noise. They are nice fans which don't hum
or rattle, but at some point, moving large amounts of air creates a
noticable ---wwwhhhooshing---- noise.
The part numbers are of the form FBA08A12L1xx where FBA is the model,
08 indicates 80 mm (09 is for 92 mm), 12 means 12V as opposed to 24V)
and the 'L' may be an L, M, H or U for Low, Medium, High or Ultra
speed. The xx may be one or two characters and indicates options
that aren't very relevant, I think.
An L or M fan is plenty fast enough and for quiet operation I'd
recommend the M. These fans can cost close to $10 depending on
where you buy them. I picked up a number of them for under $5 at one
point but they were the M or H (can't remember which at the moment).
Anyway, they were too loud for me, so I did a few calculations and
hooked up a couple of resistors to lower the input voltage that the
fan sees to lower its speed--and put the resistors right in front of
the fan, so that their heat would be exhausted out of the case. :-)
The specs on these say they can run on 7 - 13.6 V.
There are other quiet fans. You might browse PC Power and Cooling's
web site, for example. The above is simply what I'm using.
