At least indirectly, nearly all of us are affected by Katrina. Here in
Evansville, in southwestern
Indiana on a river bend not far from where the mighty Ohio meets the "father of
waters", the
Mississippi, area farmers are hoping ports that have been closed because of the
hurricane will
reopen soon. Otherwise, their grain will likely perish while sitting on barges.
At the opposite
end of of our fair state, norhtern Indiana ports are picking up traffic that
would have been
slated to go through Louisiana and receiving or sending it out through Lake
Michigan. A longer and
thus more costly route.

It's wonderful that Houston has opened their arms to the vicitims but they are
at their limit.
Other cities far away are opening up their public buildings. We are about 700
miles away and got
word 2 days ago our own municipal stadium may be tapped as a place to
temporarily house evacuees.
Fortunately for the city, there is some renovation work going on and nothing is
scheduled until
November. I saw that the Houston Astrodome is estimated to lose about $10
million in cancelled
events.

I read an article that this is the time of year cities buy and stockpile salt
for roads. Guess
which state sells the the most? Louisiana. Now city planners in the North and
Midwest are
scrambling to look for back up salt supplies in case there's a shortage from
where they
traditionally get it.

That's just 3 examples of how Katrina is _still_ affecting the entire nation.
There are/will be
many more, even things we haven't thought about... And gas prices of course...

While I don't have any family or loved ones in that immediate area, I
certainly feel for those
who do. But we are all feeling, or are going to feel, in some way the wrath of
Katrina.
