Hello from a new lister,
I need some S900 advice.
S900 (2 gig HD) running 7.6.1 using ProTools 4 with 18 gig external
SCSI HD (going south). The computer is used to edit sound files.
The set-up is working splendidly.
A situation has come up where MP3 conversion is needed. ProTools 4
can convert to AIFF files, but not MP3s.
So what to do?
First, the ailing hard drive that is indispensable for the sound files:
Should the external be replaced with an internal SCSI (18gig 68-pin
for $20 + $7 shipping + internal cable if needed)? Is that an easy
task? What kind of cable change will be needed?
Someone had a 10k rpm 18 gig 80-pin hard drive for $25. Is that better?
You probably have a 50 pin scsi setup for your internal drives, as
with most S900s, unless you or a previous owner installed a 68- or
80-pin card. So if you get anything other than a 50-pin SCSI drive,
you'll have to have some sort of adapter. Make sure it will work,
and that you can return it with no penalty if it doesn't.
Second, the software change:
DigiDesign has a free version 5 which will convert to MP3s but runs
only on OS 8.6 - 9.2.2 or X.
Audacity will only run on OS 9 and up.
Is OS 8.6 a good and stable system? Any quirks in installing that
on an S900? Any ideas where to purchase 8.6? I have a legal CD of
8.0.
I just happen to have a boxed copy of 8.5 that I was going to put on
the swap list. You can upgrade it to 8.6, which I found to be very
stable. Sorry, I don't have the upgrade on cd, but it should still
be available online. I'm open to offers.
Should OS 9.2 be used instead?
I'm currently running 9.2.2 on my S900 and it's doing fine. If I
remember correctly you have to install a helper app to get it to boot
right - see http://www.os9forever.com
Or would it make more sense to move to OS X? If so which machine
has the audio ins and outs for sound recording?
If you're happy with your current setup's speed etc and can squeeze
what you want from it, then go ahead and stick with it.
However, with B&Ws going for under $100, you might consider an
upgrade. There's a guy on the LEM swap list right now who just
offered a bunch of machines (Sawtooth G4/350 AGP 128MB/10GB DVD Zip
with modem) for $149 each too...
