comparing the xlr8 and newertech ZIF carrier cards. is one of these
clearly superior when installed in an S900? any known
incompatibilities, either with the UMAX or with any of the ZIF
processors? as always, muchos gracias in advance.

The below link will answer most of your questions about the Newertech
Carrier card. I'd forgotten about this card. It was only made for a
short time near the end of the company. NewerTech made great products
but were poor at the business end it seems. I can tell You the XLR8
Carrier card like all their stuff is top notch. I've ran one for nearly
5 years in my Umax J700 upgrading the Zif as the prices came down.
Started at G3 300 overclocked to 350 and then the G3 500 clocked to 550
and finally a G4 running at 533 with 58 bus speed. Seems compatible
with most any Zif from my experience and others over the years. Even
the Sonnet Zif can be used but with less overclocking options. For the
record Powerlogix also made a carrier card but not as adjustable for
fine tuning and the cards seem weaker in a number of ways. I think Jeff
W may of played with one fairly recently. best of luck Will S
