I forgot to mention many details:

I tried <directory /usr/share>   suphp off </directory>
trick, but that resulted in not having any php interpreter for that 
directory - it seemed!

I also got the warning (since squirrelmail's owner is root) that the 
folder or file was below min_userid ..
