I still would find it maybe a more interesting idea to actually get the Elphel to control the motor controllers as well, as the ultimate weight reduction and integrated solution. I recall that there was actually a group that made their Linux router fly... it should be feasable. Though you may prefer a Paparazzi/Ardupilot for the dedicated job.
