Paul, It should not be difficult to make lighttpd working - on (K)Ubuntu 9.04, 9,10 or 10.4 you should be able to install all the required software by following instructions on our wiki. Possible installation problems should reveal themselves in "build.log" file - you can archive it and send to us to have a look.
