It doesn't always do that. Sometimes it groups them by the date but

Take a look at the references or reply-to headers, and see if that gives
you information. You sometimes get this if (a) the 1st reply went to
someone by mail, such as a mailing list, (b) the Message-ID from the
post wasn't used as the Message-ID of the mail, and (c) a reply then has
a 1st Message-ID a value not on the NNTP servers, while the 2nd is the
Message-ID of the original message. So not being able to thread it to
the 1st reply, it gets hung at the end of "replies to replies" after the
last reply to "2nd reply" if any.
It's confusing, hope I cleared it up without making up a ton of
examples. :-(
