Do you btw ever use the pill button in the top right corner of the
 window? Just curious.

Personally, I don't. However, if the goal is to keep the theme
consistent with skins from other Mac apps, it should be retained.

I was curious because the functionality is almost the same as a
toolbargrippie.

Apple's Human Interface Guidelines refer to the "pill" as the Toolbar Control. To be fully compliant, this button is a show/hide control for toolbars that are incorporated into the TOP of the window frame only and be accompanied by a View/Show(Hide) Toolbar menu command plus a keyboard equivalent of cm+opt+T.

Many apps take liberties with this guideline. For example, Safari doesn't have one although there is the menu equivalent View/Show(Hide) Toolbar command and a keyboard equivalent of cmd+|. Opera doesn't have one but has a View/Main Bar command but no keyboard equivlent. iTunes has neither.

The Finder is compliant with all three. In addition there is an escape for toolbar customization when the pill is clicked with option+cmd keys.

Acrobat Professional goes to the extreme and uses it for global show/hide control of all active toolbars plus a View/Toolbars/Show(Hide) Toolbars menu command and a keyboard equivalent of F8. As all Acrobat menus are drag-and-drop, there are individual toolbar grippies. Compliance in this implementation depends on whether one considers drag-and-drop toolbars as part of the top window frame when parked there. There's no mention of drag-and-drop menus in the HIG.
