It could be the email's character coding that is messed up. For incoming emails, you can change that on the fly by going in View --> Character coding and picking a different one (you probably want Unicode or ISO-8859-10). For your own emails, just make sure you picked the right coding in Edit --> Preferences --> Email aand newsgroups --> Character encoding.
