Clarification (and new information for me, too): the spelling checker comes up but apparently does not work. She'll deliberately mis-spell words, select "check spelling," see the display but no words are marked as mis-spelled. When she tries this again she sees a message that there are no mis-spelled words. Strange. I've no idea where to look for the reason since aspell and the English dictionary are installed and apparently being invoked.
