The close button on tabs is currently being implemented in Bug 534221 <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=534221> but that will only appear in SM 2.1. Focus-on-hover sounds like an interesting idea. I just filed an enhancement bug for that: <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=546038>. Alternatively (or additionally) it might be worth a try to create an extension for that well-defined feature.
