No wonder no-one deigned to answer my naive question! A simple re-boot
fixed the problem. (Currently lacking an external monitor, I have been
using my laptop's own screen. Instead of shutting down the computer
between sessions, I had simply been closing the lid - which induces
'rest' mode, not 'off' mode. So no re-booting had been happening.)
