he said it was in the Mail & Newsgroup section of the general
Preferences.

Sorry!!! and this top posting is giving me the irits.
In the Preferences you have a section for Appearance, (...where would
you want that to go??), a section for the Browser, a section for Mail &
News, a section for Composer, a section for ChatZilla, a section for
Privacy & Security (...where would you want that to go??) and an
Advanced functions section.
These are all available from the Browser, Mail & News and, I guess, the
composer and ChatZilla.
Seems pretty simple to me!!
