HEY!
I have discussed this with a computer guru and apparently I have been
thinking about this all wrong.
Blocking the sites google-analytics and googleadservices makes for a
LONGER wait time!
When you block them, as I have done in the Hosts file, the browser waits
until they time-out! I thought it would completely ignore the attempt
to connect, resulting in the webpage load to be faster - but it's the
exact opposite! It has to wait to see if the tracker will be able to
connect and then when it doesn't, after a few seconds, it goes on to
load the page.
So I am going to UNBLOCK the sites in Hosts!
That ... or get a new computer guru.
Give it a try, Mark. I just did multiple tests where I loaded CNN.
With the two sites listed blocked in hosts the loading time was 11
sectonds.
With the two sites unblocked (a # before each on Hosts), the loading
time was 4-5 seconds.
Problem solved.

But, Dave, did you clear your cache between the two tests??
When you did the first test (11 secs with two sites blocked), the
browser had to send out a request to the CNN site for the information it
was to displaying, then CNN sent that info to you. Time taken = 11 secs.
If you didn't clear your cache, the second time you went to the CNN
site, the browser asked if the files it *HAD ALREADY REQUESTED AND
DOWNLOADED* had been replaced (i.e. updated), and when CNN said "no",
the info required was already siting on your computer in the cache and,
lo and behold, the second time things worked quicker, hence Time Taken =
4.5 secs.
Try comparing apples with apples.....time the download with two sites
blocked, then *CLEAR YOUR CACHE*
(Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Cache->Clear Cache button, and then again
test the download time, this time with your two sites unblocked (i.e. #).
Report Back!!
