When the cursor is in the body choose Options->Check Spelling. This
gives a new window from which you can switch to another language on the
fly. Works for Mail or News.

Or you can automatically switch to another language by account or
folder. I do so for news.mozilla.org using Mnenhy.

Right-mouse menu in the folderpane, Folder Storage, uncheck 'Inherit
parent data' and the set the pref under 'Folder Configuration'.
