On April 24, 2009, I opened a big can of worms by asking in this
newsgroup if it was possible to get the Password Manager to offer to
save passwords for more https:// sites.
I was told to try putting the following into the user.js file for my
profile to significantly expand the scope of the Password Manager:
user_pref("wallet.crypto", true);
user_pref("wallet.crypto.autocompleteoverride", true);
I did this and it worked to some extent. However, it also required me to
specify a Master Password, which I did not have up until that time.
After that, it kept pestering me for my Master Password. I could never
get it to work to my satisfaction, so I removed the two lines from my
user.js file. After that, I wasn't being asked for my Master Password
anymore. (This was with v1.1.1x, whatever was the latest at that time).
All was fine until I decided to give SeaMonkey v2.04 a try. It installed
OK and successfully imported my old profile. It also started pestering
me for my Master Password again. It appeared that if I wanted to stay
with v2.04 without the need to use a Master Password, I would have to
reset it which would cause all my stored passwords to be lost. I would
have to manually re-enter all of them, not a trivial task when you have
over a hundred. At this point I have gone back to using SeaMonkey v1.1.19.
I think there ought to be a way to get rid of the Master Password
without losing all the stored passwords. I fully understand the security
issue involved, and that you can't allow someone to remove the Master
Password if they don't know what it is without deleting the stored
passwords. But I *DO* know my Master Password. Why can't there be a
function which will allow one to remove the Master Password without
deleting the stored password database after first entering the Master
Password to prove they know it?
