I've been warned against using the password managers in browsers by
our IT security folks at work (and I never do, at work)...I think I'm
going to start paying closer attention to them.

It makes a big difference what you're using them for.

If you're visiting a site that wants you to log in to view their
content, like the /New York Times/, who cares if your password is
compromised? No one can gain any advantage by it, no money changes
hands, and if they're rude enough to unsubscribe you, just re-up with a
new name and password. I lie to those people all the time -- I have a
Yahoo account in the name of Haywood Jabuzoff, for example. Why should
they have my age and gender and mother's maiden name and all the other
invasive stuff they demand? So they can serve better ads, of course, and
I block those.

On the other hand, if you're talking about a bank site, or a place where
you can order goods and services and commit to paying for them, that's a
whole nother story. No way should that stuff be on your computer.

Doesn't matter - ID theft is ID theft, and if you develop a bad habit in one application, chances are that you will propagate that habit.

I think I'm about to change my habit...

I ride my bicycle without a seatbelt, but that hasn't extended to my car. I take a shower without a condom, but that hasn't carried over to my sex life. Shall I go on?

And if someone wants to steal my entirely fictional identity at the /NY Times/, they're welcome to it. Let's see, the last time I logged in, I was a female from Hungary, born 1942, making $75-99K as a skilled laborer, and I read the paper regularly but I didn't subscribe. Oh, and my email address was <[email protected]>. My member ID was UdxGZM1K, and my password was psA1v_ja. It's all yours. Tomorrow, I'll be someone else.

...if I could, I'd not wear a seat belt or a motorcycle helmet...an the women I know hate condoms even more than I do...so...

...but I'll go on going to all the lengths I can to prevent ID theft. I know an increasing number of people that have lost large sums of money to it. And I REALLY hate people fooling around with my money...
