Exactly my problem, no pull-down menu with a right-click, and 'managing
the subscription' attempts to connect to the site and fails. Under
'managing', unsubscribe does nothing. Most unusual.
Thanks for the advice; any other suggestions are most welcome.

Do it manually by changing the .rc file.
Mine is here (1117):
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application
Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\zlx0fbd1.slt\News
Then go here and remove that group's info from the news file.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application
Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\zlx0fbd1.slt\News\news.eternal-september.org
