Suggest looking at the "Message" and "Threads" "View" settings for the
Trash folder.

It makes no difference when I try to adjust any of those settings. A
message which is marked as "unread" in the Inbox and "deleted" ends up
in the Trash folder as "read". What happens when you delete an "unread"
message in your Inbox? Does it get moved to the Trash folder and still
shows as "unread"?
