Do you have a persdict.dat file in the slt folder of your profile?
Two thoughts if it's not there..._run_ the spellchecker (rather than checking as you type) then see if there is an "add..." option on a word.
Use a text editor (such as notepad) to create an empty persdict.dat file and see if that then offers the "add" option.
