In December, I posted the following on this newsgroup:
===================================================================
"Hi all --
At work we use Lotus Notes for e-mail. I also have Seamonkey 2.0.
Today, I uninstalled the old browser, Seamonkey 1.18. Now, when I click
on a link in an email in Lotus Notes, nothing happens (used to open a SM
1.18 window.) I opened Seamonkey 2.0, and went to
edit-->preferences-->browser and clicked on Set Default Browser, but
nothing happens. Here, at home, that button is grayed out, and it says
Seamonkey is already your default browser. But that doesn't happen at
work. Out of curiosity, would I have to log in under my administrator
account to do that?
What do I do? (Have XP, SP3 at work)."
===================================================================
I did not receive any helpful advice in this newsgroup. I couldn't even
set IE as a default browser. Also I contacted our IT group at work, and
they were also unable to help. They even tried tweaking the Windows
Registry, without success. However, if I logged in on Windows with my
Administrator's account, I could set the default browser, but only for
the Administrator's account. (Actually our IT group has some pretty
good poeple in it).
The hint at solving the problem was when IT told me last week that they
found out the STIG (Security Technical Implementation Guide) set the
default browser, and we couldn't change it. One of my work buddies and
I talked about it, and came to the conclusion that the STIG had set the
default browser to nothing, and we couldn't change the setting. So
here's how we fixed the problem.
I logged in under my Administrator's account, and temporarily promoted
my user's account to administrator. I then logged in under my user
account and set the default browser. I then logged back in under my
administrator's account, and demoted it to the lowly privileges it had
before.
It's been over 24 hours and the default browser has not changed, so I'd
say the problem's fixed. (I feel so much more secure because the STIG
can set the default browser for me).
STIGGED again!!! (sigh)
