"Mark as Read" (M key) simply toggles the Read state of all selected messages based on the first selected message. So if the first message is Read, M will mark all selected messages as Unread. If it is Unread, press M twice and all will be marked Unread. If you start with Ctrl+A (Select All), all messages in the current view will be affected.
