Looks like the error occurs when the user does NOT have itunes installed
on the computer when browsing apps.

Question remains... how to prevent this from generating an error on a
computer without itunes installed (installing itunes is not an option)

AS far as I know, the iTunes Store is only accessible directly through
iTunes via an iTunes account (Apple ID). That's how Apple designed it
to be.
But it seems you can also browse via these links:
