Thanks for the clarification and posting the manual recovery option for messages still in the inbox for the op to pursue.

However, I think/thought the op was asking why the trash was empty when he had taken no action to empty it.

It would be nice, but, as far as I know there is no way to toggle the deleted messages on and off.

It is possible to recover deleted messages sequentially within SM by using <ctrl-z> but don't know how far/long that works... i.e. if it's possible after closing SM and returning. It is possible to return to a folder and do so after going elsewhere in the same session.
