The problem is that with the current FF Sync add-on version you might not be able to do that on the SM side anymore. The relevant preferences pane is broken, at least in case you already set up an account.
Installing an older FF Sync add-on version (1.4) should allow to set up Sync with SM, though the final step of the wizard might fail (it would only open a website if it succeeded, though). Once everything is set up you can update to the current version (where the actual syncing still works).
