I bought some software - Graphics Workshop 4.0 from
 Alchemy Mindworks.

Loaded it and want different "skins" than came with it.

I have to go to this site
 ftp://ftp.alchemymindworks.com/pub/alchemy/themes40.msi

Up pops a window says seeking authentication...
then after about ten seconds another window asking for User and Password.

I assume this is coming from them.
I have a user name and password of theirs, but it does not work.

There tech rep is stymied, says I should not see that window and asked,
"Is the FTP login name for your web browser set to "anonymous"? (Without
 the quote marks.)"

I have NO IDEA what he is talking about.

 HELP ?

You said: "I have a user name and password of theirs, but it does not
work." I assumed per example that your username is "USER" ans your
 password is "PWD"
So you should try to connect to the ftp server with the url modified
 with your real user/password...
This is the url you need:
 ftp://USER:[email protected]/pub/alchemy/themes40.msi
  try it ...

OK...!
Got it to work.
I used "anonymous" and my ISP password.

I never use ftp: so I don't have a clue about it.

The tech rep (ha!) didn't explain what software password to use.
The little window had their name on it, but that doesn't mean it is
asking for their password...
Jesus, folks - that sure is clear as mud.

I wonder if they ever heard the term "user Friendly".

Very few people are computer knowledgeable on ftp protocol.

Don't blame Alchemy or their tech people (or SM) for this. Using SM 2.0.8 here, I clicked your URL and the file came right down - it's in a public directory, and no password was required or prompted for.

My _guess_ would be that whatever alternate download manager you're using got confused somehow. -JW
